Which is a Gastroenterology? is the medical specialty that deals with diseases of the digestive system and associated organs. There are different types of exams in this branch; its name and procedure varies according to the organ that is intended to be studied. At ESCANO we perform Endoscopy, Colonoscopy and Rectosigmoidoscopy.
digestive endoscopy
Digestive endoscopy is an outpatient procedure used to examine the interior of the esophagus, stomach, and part of the duodenum. Endoscopy facilitates the diagnosis of digestive symptoms such as heartburn, vomiting, nausea, difficulty swallowing, bleeding or pain in the abdomen. It allows to diagnose, or in other cases to prevent, gastritis, ulcers or tumors. It can be performed with or without sedation according to the patient's choice.
colonoscopy
Colonoscopy is an outpatient procedure performed under sedation that allows the entire interior of the large intestine (rectum and colon) to be examined. Colonoscopy helps diagnose symptoms such as bleeding, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, among others. It allows diagnosing, or in other cases preventing, polyps or colon cancer.
rectosigmoidoscopy
Rectosigmoidoscopy is an outpatient procedure that allows examining the anus and the interior of the last part of the colon (rectum and sigmoid). This test is performed to diagnose diseases such as hemorrhoids, anal infections, polyps, rectal inflammation, or fissures. It can be performed with or without sedation according to the patient's choice.

endoscopy
The gastroenterologist inserts a mouth scope (tube with a small camera attached) down the throat, esophagus, stomach, and small intestine. Endoscopy does not generate pain, however, at the time of the examination you may experience nausea. The patient can decide whether or not she requires the exam under sedation.
This exam lasts approximately 15 minutes and allows you to examine the parts carefully and systematically. In some it is necessary to take a biopsy according to the doctor's criteria.
If the exam is performed under sedation, the patient will then be taken to a recovery room until the effects wear off. You will be discharged and the results will be delivered to you at the previously agreed time.
colonoscopy
The gastroenterologist introduces a colonoscope through the anus and passes it through all the regions of the colon until reaching the cecum, and in most cases until the last part of the small intestine called the ileum.
This procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes and must be performed under sedation. In some it is necessary to take a biopsy according to the doctor's criteria.
The patient will be taken after the exam to a recovery room until the effects of the sedation wear off. You will be discharged and the results will be delivered to you at the previously agreed time.
rectosigmoidoscopy
The gastroenterologist inserts a colonoscope through the anus to examine it, then through the rectum and from there to the sigmoid colon to examine all parts.
At the time of the exam you may experience an uncomfortable sensation. The patient can decide whether or not she requires the exam under sedation.
The exam lasts 30 minutes. In some it is necessary to take a biopsy according to the doctor's criteria.
If the exam is performed under sedation, the patient will then be taken to a recovery room until the effects wear off. You will be discharged and the results will be delivered to you at the previously agreed time.
